Medical Facts Behind the Suppression Phenomenon

Have you ever felt awake, but unable to talk or move? People often call it oppression. Actually the events that are often associated with these mystical events have a medical explanation. Sleepiness, medically called sleep paralysis, is an event usually characterized by an inability to talk or move when awake from sleep or when going to sleep, lasting for several seconds to several minutes.

Triggered Muscle paralysis

Muscles become inactive during sleep, which is normal. When depression occurs, muscle inactivity continues for some time from sleep to conscious period. When experiencing depression, it is also possible to cause someone to feel difficulty breathing. In addition, it is not uncommon for anyone to feel another sensation, for example feeling there is another figure with him. This is a common type of hallucination. There are two types of sleep paralysis, namely:
  • Hypnagogic sleep paralysis.

  • This type of paralysis or paralysis occurs before a person falls asleep completely. Generally, when going to sleep, the body will feel more relaxed and slowly lose consciousness. For someone who has hypnagogic sleep paralysis, he remains conscious, but he cannot speak or move the body.
  • Hypnopompic sleep paralysis.

  • This kind of paralysis takes place when a person wakes up at the end of the sleep period. Generally, sleep is divided into two, namely NREM (non-rapid eye movement) and REM (rapid eye movement). The NREM portion is about 75 percent of the sleep period, while the rest is the REM sleep period. When a person wakes up before the REM period ends, that's when hypnopompic sleep paralysis can occur.

Tracing Risk Factors

Some things that can increase a person's risk of experiencing this phenomenon are when they experience lack of sleep or irregular sleep patterns. The age factor also influences, adolescents and young adults are the ones who are more at risk. In addition there are other risk factors, such as heredity, sleeping in the supine position, experiencing stress, suffering from bipolar disorder, leg cramps at night, and drug abuse. Although rare, sleep paralysis can also be a symptom of narcolepsy, which is a sleep disorder that causes sufferers to have difficulty staying awake for more than 3-4 hours.

Fulfilling Sleep Needs

Everyone has the possibility of experiencing depression. There is no difference between men and women. There are those who experience depression only one or two times in a lifetime, but there are also those who face several times a month or more often. Some habits change, often effectively overcome the phenomenon of oppression. For example, ensuring the fulfillment of time needed to sleep, which is about 6-8 hours each night, improving the bed environment, or starting to sleep and wake up at the same time on a regular basis. Other healthy lifestyle can also reduce the possibility of sleep paralysis, such as regular exercise, reduce caffeine consumption, avoid the consumption of alcoholic beverages and stop smoking.

Signs to Watch Out for

Sleep paralysis often does not require special treatment, but check yourself immediately if you then experience the following:
  • Excessive anxiety or worry.
  • Feel tired all day.
  • Unable to sleep all night.
The use of drugs should only be done based on doctor's advice. Chances are the doctor will give antidepressant drugs to help overcome this. Experiencing depression in general makes a person feel scared, but there is no need to worry too much. By improving sleep patterns and adopting a healthy lifestyle, it is often effective in reducing the risk of recurrence of these events. If symptoms continue and begin to interfere, consult your doctor to get the best solution.
